What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift improves breast shape and position when the skin and supporting tissues have stretched over time. The procedure can elevate a low nipple position, reduce an enlarged areola, and create a firmer breast contour. A breast lift does not significantly increase breast volume. Patients who also want greater fullness may benefit from breast implants or fat grafting, while those who want a smaller breast size may consider a breast reduction.

Breast Lift Glossary

TermDefinition
Auto-augmentationA technique that reshapes and repositions a patient’s own breast tissue to improve fullness without an implant.
Breast ptosisDrooping or sagging of the breast and nipple.
Nipple-areola complexThe nipple and surrounding pigmented skin.
Inframammary incisionAn incision placed within the crease beneath the breast.
Periareolar incisionAn incision placed around the edge of the areola.
Vertical incisionAn incision extending from the areola to the breast crease.

What Can a Breast Lift Improve?

Women choose breast lift surgery to address one or more of the following concerns:

  • Breasts that have descended after pregnancy, breastfeeding, aging, or weight change
  • Nipples that sit low on the breast or point downward
  • Stretched skin and reduced breast firmness
  • Enlarged or uneven areolas
  • Differences in breast shape or nipple position
  • Loss of a youthful breast contour

Who Is a Candidate?

A breast lift may be appropriate for patients who:

  • Are bothered by breast sagging or a low nipple position
  • Have a stable weight and are in good overall health
  • Do not use nicotine or are willing to stop before and after surgery
  • Have realistic expectations regarding scars, symmetry, and long-term changes
  • Understand that aging, future pregnancies and weight fluctuations may alter the result
  • Are willing to follow postoperative activity and support-bra recommendations

Your consultation includes an assessment of breast size, skin quality, nipple position, asymmetry, chest-wall anatomy, and desired volume. These factors help determine whether a lift alone or a lift combined with augmentation or reduction is most appropriate.

Breast Lift Incision Options

Our surgeons perform mastopexy using the incision best suited to the patient’s amount of skin excess, breast size, nipple position, and desired result.

  • Periarelor: This incision follows the border between the areola and surrounding skin and may be used for a modest lift in selected patients.
  • Vertical or “lollipop”: This pattern allows more reshaping and is commonly used for moderate breast sagging. The incision extends around the areola and down to the breast crease.
  • Anchor: This incision pattern may be needed when there is substantial skin excess or a significant degree of sagging. The incision extends around the areola and down to the breast crease like the vertical incision with an additional incision along the crease beneath the breast.

Your surgeon will recommend the shortest scar pattern that safely provides the necessary lift and shape. All breast lift scars are permanent, but they generally soften and fade over time.

How Is the Surgery Performed?

A breast lift is performed under general anesthesia, usually as an outpatient procedure. Excess skin is removed, breast tissue is reshaped, and the nipple and areola are moved to a more youthful position while remaining attached to their underlying blood supply. The incisions are then closed in layers.

Can a Breast Lift Improve Upper-Breast Fullness Without Implants?

A breast lift with auto-augmentation can improve breast shape and upper-pole fullness using the patient’s own breast tissue. It does not add new volume and may not provide as much upper-pole fullness as an implant.

Can a Breast Lift Be Combined With Other Procedures?

Depending on your goals, a breast lift may be combined with:

  • Breast augmentation with implants
  • Fat grafting for modest volume enhancement or contour refinement
  • Breast reduction
  • Correction of breast asymmetry
  • Nipple or areola reduction

Many women combine breast lift surgery with liposuction and a tummy tuck as part of a comprehensive postpartum body-contouring plan called a mommy makeover.

What Is Recovery Like?

After breast lift surgery, most patients are ready to resume nonstrenuous jobs and activity in about a week. While we recommend gentle walks throughout the day soon after surgery, more strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and upper-body activity are typically restricted for several weeks and resumed gradually with your surgeon’s guidance.

Recovery Timeline

Week 1

  • Swelling, bruising, soreness, and temporary changes in sensation are expected.
  • A supportive postoperative bra is typically worn as directed.
  • Light walking is encouraged, but lifting and strenuous activity are restricted.
  • Many patients return to desk-based work within approximately 1 week.

Weeks 2-6

  • Swelling gradually improves, and the breasts begin to settle.
  • Activity is increased gradually according to your surgeon’s instructions.
  • Heavy lifting, running, and upper-body exercise may remain restricted for several weeks.
  • Incisions may appear pink, firm, or raised before gradually softening.

Long Term

  • Breast shape continues to settle and soften over several months.
  • Scars fade gradually but do not disappear completely.
  • Results are long lasting. The natural aging process, gravity, pregnancy, and weight changes may lead to recurrent sagging over time.
  • Maintaining a stable weight and wearing supportive garments may help preserve the result.

Breast Lift Risks and Considerations

Potential risks include bleeding, infection, delayed healing, widened or raised scars, asymmetry, contour irregularity, changes in nipple or breast sensation, loss of nipple or skin tissue, fat necrosis, fluid collections, difficulty breastfeeding, recurrent sagging, and the need for revision surgery. Perfect symmetry cannot be guaranteed, and small differences between the breasts commonly remain after surgery.

Breast Screening and Future Pregnancy

A breast lift does not eliminate the need for routine breast health screening. Patients should continue age- and risk-appropriate mammography and tell the imaging center about prior breast surgery. Many patients can breastfeed after a breast lift, but no operation can guarantee future breastfeeding. Pregnancy and breastfeeding may stretch the tissues again and change the surgical result.

Insight From Our Surgeons

A breast lift doesn’t always require an implant to improve upper-breast fullness. Dr. Sergesketter offers an auto-augmentation technique that repositions your existing breast tissue, helping create fullness in the upper breast while reshaping and lifting the breast. In selected cases, she may also use surgical mesh for additional support.

Breast Lift FAQ

Will a breast lift make my breasts smaller?

A lift removes excess skin and reshapes the breasts, so they may look slightly smaller or fit differently in a bra even when little breast tissue is removed. Patients who want a meaningful reduction in volume may benefit from a breast reduction.

Will a breast lift add upper-pole fullness?

A lift can improve shape and reposition existing tissue, but it may not create the upper-breast fullness that an implant provides. Fat grafting or an implant may be considered when additional volume is desired.

Will I lose nipple sensation?

Temporary changes in nipple or breast sensation are common. Permanent decreased or increased sensation can occur, although most patients retain useful sensation.

Should I wait until after pregnancy?

It is often reasonable to delay surgery until childbearing is complete because pregnancy and breastfeeding can stretch the breasts again. However, timing is personal and can be discussed during consultation.

Can I breastfeed after a breast lift?

Many patients are able to breastfeed, but the ability to do so cannot be guaranteed.

Can a breast lift and augmentation be performed together?

Yes, selected patients may have a lift and implants placed during the same operation. In some cases, separating the procedures may provide greater control or reduce risk. Your surgeon will discuss the safest approach for your anatomy and goals.
