Skin Cancer Reconstruction

Typically developing on skin that is regularly exposed to the sun, skin cancer affects 1 in 5 Americans over their lifetime. Cancerous lesions are often removed by a plastic surgeon or a dermatologist trained in Mohs surgery, which is an especially effective treatment for cosmetically sensitive areas such as the face. Removal of the cancer often leaves a defect that requires reconstruction to close the skin or rebuild the treated area. At UVA Plastic Surgery, all of our plastic surgeons offer skin cancer reconstruction at our offices in Charlottesville and Fishersville for patients from Richmond and Roanoke, VA, and surrounding areas. Dr. Black and Dr. Gampper perform the highest number of skin cancer reconstruction procedures for the face.

Techniques

As area leaders in skin cancer reconstructive surgery, our surgeons are skilled in the latest techniques used to restore and repair the appearance of affected areas, which may include:

  • Linear closure
  • Skin graft
  • Flap surgery

Our surgeons always balance the patient’s functional needs and the treatment area with the goal of providing the best aesthetic outcome.
