Rhinoplasty

In Charlottesville and Fishersville, the experienced plastic surgeons at UVA Plastic Surgery are known for their expertise in the art and science of cosmetic nose surgery. They understand the aesthetic interplay between all facial features, which means that a nose out of balance can stand out. Our surgeons possess the refined technical abilities required to reshape the nose. When performed by one of our surgeons, nose surgery, technically called rhinoplasty, helps people from Richmond and Roanoke, VA; Washington, D.C.; and nearby cities improve the shape and size of their noses while also enhancing the overall appearance of their faces.

Who is a candidate for rhinoplasty?

Cosmetic nose surgery (nose job) is appropriate for women and men, as well as adolescents whose facial growth is complete. Through meticulous attention to detail and advanced surgical techniques, our surgeons perform rhinoplasty to provide one or a combination of the following improvements:

  • Reducing a bump or hump on the bridge of the nose
  • Changing the size of the nose or nostrils
  • Straightening out a crooked nose
  • Repairing damage due to trauma
  • Improving congenital deformities

In some cases, patients who prefer a nonsurgical approach to reshaping the nose might consider the use of dermal filler injections to provide temporary enhancements.

How is rhinoplasty performed?

Our plastic surgeons perform rhinoplasty as an outpatient procedure using either local anesthetic with IV sedation or general anesthetic. In most cases, surgeons use the open technique to attain an unobstructed view of, and access to, the inside of the nose. Unlike the closed technique, which requires no external incision, the open technique involves an incision placed along the columella (strip of tissue between the nostrils) where it meets the upper lip. Once the inner nose is exposed, the surgeon makes the necessary adjustments to the soft tissues, cartilage, and nasal bones to improve the external contours. The incision is closed with tiny stitches, and a splint may be placed over the nose to protect it while healing.

What can I expect during rhinoplasty recovery?

After surgery, experiences vary, depending on the extent of each rhinoplasty procedure. By applying cold compresses and keeping the head elevated for the first few days, patients can minimize swelling and bruising. Our surgeons rarely use nasal packing, so discomfort is minimal. The splint and stitches are removed within about 7 days. Most patients can resume their regular everyday activities, including work or school, after about 7 to 10 days.

How long after rhinoplasty will I see results?

Rhinoplasty results develop gradually; most of the swelling diminishes within the first few weeks. The new shape of the nose may continue to change and refine for as long as a year.
