Just as fashion trends have changed, I have noticed a shift in desired plastic surgery results over the past 20 to 30 years. While there are certainly exceptions, most cosmetic plastic surgery patients these days are looking for more subtle changes. Instead of changing your overall look, we are merely tweaking smaller things to highlight your best qualities.

As some of the best plastic surgeons here in Charlottesville, VA, our goal is to provide you with beautiful, natural-looking results. Here are some of the plastic surgery trends our patients should know.

Breast Augmentation

Up until the early 2000s, patients were opting for high, round, large implants. Cleavage was one of the most important priorities. Some of this may have been related to the fact that there were not breast implant options that were designed to give natural-looking results. There wasn’t much of an option for natural-looking results.

However, with new technology and techniques, skilled plastic surgeons are able to provide patients with results that both look and feel like real breast tissue. Now patients have the option of more highly cohesive silicone breast implants, incisions placed along the breast fold, and implants placed under the muscle. These 3 options combined can disguise many of the telltale signs of plastic surgery.

Thus, because realistic breasts implants are now available, it seems that the era of large implants may be over, or at least less commonly chosen and performed. More and more, our breast augmentation patients in Charlottesville are requesting more subtle, proportionate enhancements that suit their natural frame.

In some cases, patients prefer to use their own fat over synthetic implants! In a breast augmentation with fat transfer procedure, we take fat from one area of the body, purify it, and inject it into the breasts for a natural look and feel. This option is desirable for many women seeking a modest increase in breast volume and who would prefer to avoid future procedures to exchange or remove implants.

Rhinoplasty

In the past, rhinoplasty patients wanted small, symmetrical noses (think Barbie), and as a result, all patients were leaving their plastic surgeons offices with the “same” cookie cutter-style nose. Treatment plans were almost identical and ignored a patient’s unique facial structure.

At UVA Plastic Surgery, we start with a thorough evaluation of your existing facial features and create a surgical plan that will help you feel confident and beautiful, without taking away what makes you, you. We aim to preserve your distinctive qualities. In fact, we even offer nonsurgical treatments, which use fillers to subtly reshape the nose (a procedure often referred to as a liquid rhinoplasty).

Charlottesville men and women may choose this option to demonstrate a temporary change that rhinoplasty might make permanent in the future. Alternately, a “liquid nose job” could be a longer-term solution to delay or avoid cosmetic surgery. Keep in mind that nonsurgical treatments will not be able to treat functional breathing issues.

Facelift

Old photos of bad facelifts fool many people into thinking that the procedure will leave them with tight skin, puffy lips, and unnatural-looking cheeks. A bad facelift can certainly give patients the undesirable look of a mannequin or a wind-blown appearance.

Today, however, thanks to a combination of updated techniques and the skill of a board-certified plastic surgeon, a facelift can provide patients with natural, youthful facial contours. In the past, facelifts were all performed one way—by taking the skin and pulling it back toward the ears.

Now, facelifts are highly individualized according to your facial structure. As highly trained, board certified plastic surgeons, we are very comfortable with addressing the deeper layers of the face to provide a more complete, yet more natural facial rejuvenation that is more than just “skin deep.” With a modern facelift, our Charlottesville patients look better without having telltale signs of surgery. Plus, their results last longer too, as our surgeons adjust the deeper structures of the face.

Plastic Surgery for Men

Like men all over the country, men from Richmond, Roanoke, Charlottesville, and beyond are embracing what plastic surgery can do for them. Male plastic surgery requires a different approach to account for nuances in anatomy and aesthetic goals. Whether they are choosing a facelift, tummy tuck, or correcting gynecomastia, male patients are comfortable taking charge of their appearance.

Nonsurgical Treatments

As an adjunct to surgery or as a standalone intervention, patients are choosing the least invasive options when they can, whether it be body contouring with CoolSculpting® or preventative BOTOX® to stave off future wrinkles from forming and existing wrinkles from deepening. Our Charlottesville patients are considering multiple modalities to achieve the results they want.
